The coverage of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Scheme has been expanded to cover casual and contractual workers employed by municipal bodies. These bodies include Municipal Corporation (Nagar Nigam), Municipal councils, Nagar Palika, and other Urban Local Bodies under the authority of the State Government, wherein ten or more individuals are employed or have been employed on casual or contractual or combined basis and have received at any point during the preceding twelve months. The aforementioned expansion has taken effect as a result of a notification from the relevant State administrations. For instance, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, in the exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (5) of section 1 of the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948, extended the scope to the abovementioned class of establishments.
