Menstrual Leave Introduced At MP’s Dharmashastra National Law University

The Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), situated in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district, has put in place menstrual leave privilege for female students starting from the ongoing 5-month semester that began in August, an official said.

Dr. Shailesh N Hadli, in charge Vice Chancellor of the University, informed news agency PTI that there had been a long-standing demand from students, including the Students Bar Association, since last year for menstrual leave.

He further said, “In the wake of it, we, including our Students Welfare Dean, decided to give the (menstrual) leave from this semester. These offs will be part of six leaves given to students to take part in cultural and other important events each semester. Female students can avail these leaves.”

The Vice Chancellor further mentioned that this initiative was a step towards the betterment and welfare of the students.

Earlier this year in February, the Supreme Court declined to consider a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) that sought directions to all states to establish regulations for menstrual pain leave for female students and working women. The court opined that the matter fell within the jurisdiction of government policy.
